It was with great delight that Fern Hames and Janet Pritchard got in touch with me to share the news that the Native Fish Strategy won the prestigious 2014 David Ashton Environment Award for outstanding achievement in environmental science including supporting policy, regulation and compliance and environmental science. The David Ashton Environment Award is open to an individual or team, with work being completed within the last 3 years. The Native Fish Strategy addressed key knowledge gaps and was instrumental in advancing a range of initiatives reducing the threats to native fish and river health.
The Native Fish Strategy, and Department of Environment and Primary Industries scientific contribution to the Native Fish Strategy, was recognised for developing new knowledge through innovative science. This included new population modelling approaches for Murray cod; non-lethal methods to discriminate between stocked and wild fish; an integrated approach to river rehabilitation through Demonstration Reaches; a science-based methodology for re snagging; and development of the award winning William’s carp cage which separates adult carp moving through fish ways while automatically releasing native fish.
